Foundational sciences
Early training includes anatomy, physiology, histology, microbiology, immunology, pathology, pharmacology, nutrition, genetics, and epidemiology. These subjects explain how normal systems work and what changes during disease.
Clinical disciplines
Students learn internal medicine, surgery, anesthesia, diagnostic imaging, reproduction, dermatology, ophthalmology, cardiology, neurology, oncology, emergency medicine, dentistry, behavior, and preventive care. Exposure typically includes both companion animals and other species.
Diagnostics and decision-making
Veterinary education emphasizes taking a history, performing a physical examination, building a differential diagnosis, selecting tests appropriately, interpreting evidence, and discussing uncertainty. Good medicine is not “ordering every test”; it is choosing the right next step for the patient.
Public health and professional responsibilities
Zoonotic disease, food safety, antimicrobial stewardship, animal welfare, ethics, communication, and One Health are core parts of the profession. After graduation, veterinarians continue learning through continuing education and may pursue internships, residencies, board certification, or advanced research.
