Does grass mean an upset stomach?
Some dogs may eat vegetation when nauseated, but studies and owner observations suggest many dogs eat grass without showing illness beforehand and most do not vomit afterward. The behavior can also be exploratory or simply reinforcing.
What are the risks?
Grass can be contaminated with herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, parasite eggs, feces, or toxic plants. Avoid allowing grazing on recently treated lawns or areas with unknown chemical exposure.
When should it be investigated?
Veterinary evaluation is appropriate if grass eating becomes suddenly frequent, the dog cannot settle, or it occurs with repeated vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, reduced appetite, abdominal pain, or eating of non-food objects.
Should I add fiber?
Do not assume grass eating proves a fiber deficiency. A complete and balanced diet should already meet nutritional needs. Diet changes are best based on the dog's body condition, stool quality, medical history, and veterinarian's assessment.
