What are anal sacs?
Dogs have two small sacs beside the anus that normally release secretion during defecation. If the contents do not empty well, the sacs can become impacted, inflamed, infected, or abscessed.
Signs of anal sac disease
- Scooting
- Licking or biting under the tail
- Strong fishy odor
- Pain when sitting or defecating
- Swelling beside the anus
- Blood or pus near the anal opening
When is it urgent?
A painful red swelling, fever, marked lethargy, or a draining wound may indicate an abscess. These cases need veterinary treatment. Forceful home expression can be painful and may worsen inflammation or cause injury.
Why does it recur?
Soft stools, obesity, allergies, chronic skin disease, anatomic factors, and individual tendency can contribute. Management focuses on the cause; some dogs need periodic professional expression, while others improve when stool quality, weight, or allergy control is addressed.
