How were animals treated before modern veterinary medicine?

Humans have lived with horses, cattle, sheep, dogs and other domestic animals for thousands of years. Scientific veterinary medicine is relatively recent; attempts to heal animals are not.

Medicine did not begin 150 years ago

When people say that “modern medicine is only about 100–150 years old,” they are usually describing the rise of laboratory-based, experimental medicine in the nineteenth century. Humans had been observing disease, treating wounds, assisting births and using medicinal preparations for millennia before that.

The same distinction matters in veterinary history. Animal healing is ancient; modern scientific veterinary medicine is much newer. Veterinary schools, standardized professional education, pathology, microbiology, vaccination, anesthesia, asepsis and modern diagnostics developed gradually, especially from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries onward.

A useful way to think about it: veterinary medicine did not suddenly appear when the first veterinary school opened. An ancient body of practical animal-care knowledge began to become a standardized scientific profession.

Why did people treat animals in the first place?

For much of history, animals were not only companions. They were also transportation, draft power, military assets, food sources and wealth. Losing a horse or ox could threaten a family's livelihood or an army's mobility. That created a strong incentive to recognize illness, treat injuries and prevent losses.

Oxford's history of veterinary medicine traces animal medical care to early livestock management and notes recognized practitioners in Mesopotamia during the reign associated with the Code of Hammurabi, as well as veterinary material in Egypt's Kahun papyrus from about 1850 BCE.

Ancient written evidence—and clues in animal bones

The Kahun veterinary papyrus shows that ancient Egyptians observed sick animals and recorded approaches to particular signs. Mesopotamian legal references likewise suggest that animal treatment had enough social and economic importance to be recognized as skilled work.

Written documents are only part of the record. Archaeologists can also look for healed fractures and traces of procedures in animal remains. A Neolithic cow skull from France, dated to roughly 3400–3000 BCE, has been interpreted as possible evidence of cranial surgery. Researchers caution that it may have been treatment or surgical practice rather than a proven therapeutic operation, but it demonstrates the sophistication of some prehistoric bone-working techniques.

What did treatment actually look like?

There was no single ancient veterinary system. Practices varied across regions, species and centuries. Historical sources nevertheless show recurring themes: close observation of appetite, gait, breathing and waste; reducing work and modifying feeding; wound care; assistance with difficult births; castration and other manual procedures; and preparations made from plants, minerals or animal-derived materials.

Some cultures also used cautery or fire branding, and practical treatment could coexist with ritual or religious ideas about disease. Roman agricultural and veterinary writing discusses prophylaxis, diagnosis, therapy, birth assistance and castration, but much of the knowledge was empirical rather than based on experimentally established disease mechanisms.

Cautery, unstandardized herbal mixtures and other traditional procedures can be ineffective, painful or toxic. Modern veterinary assessment is based on present-day evidence and animal-welfare standards.

Why were horses so important?

Horses and other equids were central to transportation, agriculture, communication and warfare. Not surprisingly, much early specialized veterinary writing focused on them. Oxford sources describe Greek hippiatroi—horse doctors—by about the second century BCE, with later Roman terms for practitioners treating horses, mules and livestock.

Experience accumulated around lameness, wounds, feeding, breeding and performance. In remote grazing areas, herders themselves also treated routine injuries and illnesses. In other words, animal care existed on a spectrum from experienced stockmen to more specialized practitioners.

The baytar tradition in the medieval Islamic world

Arabic veterinary literature developed a substantial tradition, particularly around horse medicine. The U.S. National Library of Medicine notes that baytarah was used for works concerned with maintaining animal health and treating disease, especially in horses, while Greek veterinary texts were translated into Arabic and new works were composed.

A late ninth-century work associated with Ibn Akhi Hizam is an important example of Arabic hippological and hippiatric literature. These texts preserved and extended accumulated observations about equine care long before laboratory medicine existed.

Did herbal remedies work?

Sometimes a traditional preparation may have contained a pharmacologically active substance; many modern drugs also ultimately trace their origins to natural molecules. But that does not make traditional remedies automatically effective or safe. Ancient practitioners lacked standardized dosing, purity testing, toxicology, interaction data and controlled clinical trials.

Traditional veterinary studies from the Near East document both plant mixtures and practices such as fire branding. That combination illustrates why historical medicine should be viewed critically: useful observation and potentially active remedies could coexist with ineffective or harmful procedures.

1761: from practical tradition to organized veterinary education

A major institutional turning point came when Claude Bourgelat established the first veterinary school in Lyon in 1761. Historians describe the school as a break from traditional farriery and a move toward a scientific profession addressing the health of multiple animal species.

That does not mean veterinary medicine started in 1761. It means ancient practical knowledge began to acquire standardized education, professional identity and an increasingly scientific framework.

The nineteenth century changed the question

Earlier practitioners could recognize that some diseases spread between animals without knowing bacteria or viruses as we do today. The development of microbiology transformed that limitation. Veterinary medicine increasingly moved from “this treatment seems to help” toward “what causes this disease, how can we demonstrate it, and how can we prevent it?”

Louis Pasteur's work and his collaborations with veterinarians were especially influential. Historical reviews describe research involving anthrax, chicken cholera, swine erysipelas and rabies, as well as the growing veterinary adoption of germ theory and vaccination. This period helped establish prevention, microbiology and experimental evidence as central parts of veterinary medicine.

So how did animals survive before modern medicine?

Some recovered because many illnesses are self-limiting and because animals have their own immune and repair mechanisms. Good food, clean water, rest, shelter, wound care and experienced husbandry could genuinely improve outcomes.

But it is important not to romanticize the past. Many animals also died from conditions that are treatable today. Severe infections, obstructed labor, major trauma and epidemics could be devastating. Historical records naturally preserve remarkable treatments more readily than the countless animals that did not survive.

The oldest veterinary skill is still essential

One ancient skill remains central: careful observation. Animals cannot describe their symptoms in words, so changes in appetite, movement, water intake, urination, stool, breathing or behavior are still where many veterinary investigations begin. Modern medicine adds structured history-taking, physical examination and diagnostic testing to those observations.

The bigger lesson

The history of veterinary medicine is not a story of “no treatment” suddenly becoming “treatment.” It is a story of experience becoming testable knowledge. Ancient herders, horse doctors and animal healers accumulated observations. Schools organized that knowledge. Anatomy, pathology and microbiology explained more of what was happening. Experiments separated some effective practices from ineffective ones. Vaccines, anesthesia, antibiotics, imaging and laboratory diagnostics then changed what could be prevented, diagnosed and treated.

That is the real difference between traditional animal healing and modern veterinary medicine: not simply the desire to help an animal, which is ancient, but our ability to test why a treatment works, define its risks, control pain and prevent disease before it occurs.
