Why choose a bed?
Soft absorbent surfaces can be attractive when a cat associates the litter box with discomfort or urgency. A frightened cat may also choose an area carrying the owner’s scent because it feels safer.
Medical causes to rule out
Constipation, colitis, diarrhea, intestinal disease, parasites, painful defecation, arthritis, and neurologic problems can all contribute. A sudden change in an older cat deserves particular attention.
Check the litter boxes
Boxes should be clean, easy to enter, large enough, and placed in quiet but accessible locations. In multi-cat homes, offer several boxes in different areas. Strongly scented litter, covered boxes, or a noisy appliance nearby can be aversive to some cats.
What should I track?
Record stool consistency, straining, frequency, appetite, vomiting, weight, urine habits, and exactly where accidents occur. Seek prompt care for repeated straining, blood, vomiting, marked lethargy, or inability to pass stool.
